"There is archaeological evidence that people have lived in this area since at least the Iron Age (around 700 BC). Undoubtedly, it must have been an inhospitable peat marsh forest at that time. Humans also lived in this area during Roman times. On the southern side, remains of an old stone oven have been found.
A charter from 1219 shows that there was already a large farm called Hof Soeterbeek on Soeterbeek at that time (on the Ing topographic map). The farm even had a small tower and was moated. Hof Soeterbeek was a fief of the Count of Kessel. In 1279, the Duke of Guelders became the owner. These changes continued until the French Period. In 1912, the last remnants of the manor farm were demolished. In popular speech, it was referred to as 't kesjtiel (castle).
