Cycling in an impressive peat landscape with lakes, heaths, sand ridges, birch forests and open plains.

De Groote Peel is varied: you stroll along water puddles, soggy swamps, groves with birch and oak, sandy open plains with swaying pipe straw, shrub heath and flying pines. Sometimes it was excavated to the sand, where heath and later forest could grow. The fens were created because large peat pits immediately filled with groundwater. Around the smaller peat pits the swamp has remained. If you see some eagle ferns together on a slightly higher part, you know: there is still peat there, because that soil is nutrient-rich
