Description by the author

The route starts from a large car park near the village of Asselt on the Asseltse Plassen along the Maas. The route goes clockwise first in the Meuse basin, then on the many long gravel roads in the forest areas just across the border in Germany. 71% of the route consists of gravel roads. A detailed description follows below.
Please note: the railway tunnel at the Mariakapel van Reuver is closed to traffic until 13 October 2023!

First of all, you cycle on the many gravel roads between Asselt and the cozy village of Beesel, including directly along the Maas and on the Maasdijk and past the castle of Beesel, and through the valley of the river Swalm (with a single hollow road). The terrain is slightly hilly near Reuver. Via gravel roads around the Schelkensbeek (around Reuver) you cycle to the Holtmühle nature reserve and climb up a steep edge that is just in the Netherlands, you descend into the gravel hole Tegelen (and you climb out again) and then you arrive in Germany. You cycle through the vast forests over hilly terrain of nature reserves Heidemoore, Brachterwald (here you have to go through a bicycle tourniquet 2 times) and Diergartscher Wald. Very briefly you come to asphalt road, and then long gravel strips follow again when crossing the river Swalm in the nature reserve Schwalmbruch (partly heathland) and the slightly hilly Elmpter Wald. In the western part of the Elmpter Wald you descend the steep edge that is just here in Germany, and you come back to the Netherlands. You cycle through nature reserve Bisschopskamp on a gravel / forest road to the castle at Boukoul and finally you cycle on asphalt roads back to Asselt.
