Veluwe

This route is laid out in the sandy landscape of Central Netherlands. The route runs through the hilly landscape of the Veluwe and the northern IJssel valley.
Hills are often kilometers wide, tens of kilometers long, and up to many tens of meters high ridges that largely consist of older river sands that were pushed up in the penultimate ice age (Saalien) in front of the glacier. Nowadays, they are mostly covered with forests.
During the last ice age (Weichselien), there was no land ice in the Netherlands, but a subarctic climate prevailed. The ground was permanently frozen (permafrost) and there was little to no vegetation present. Icy sandstorms deposited layers of cover sand. The blowing of cover sand formed locally kilometers-long low cover sand ridges, which are now mostly covered with coniferous forests. Local areas of drifting sand also formed.
The tour starts and ends at the Kootwijkerduin parking lot at the beginning of the Nieuw Milligenseweg (A1 exit 18 Kootwijk).
