The Błędów Desert is also called the "Polish Sahara" because of its unique desert-like landscape. It is not a true desert in terms of climate: precipitation is too high, but the sandy landscape and phenomena such as fata morganas and sandstorms were common here in the past. In the 20th century, the area was used as a military training ground, including by the German Afrika Korps during World War II.
The area is now partly protected and part of the Natura 2000 network. The Błędów Desert is a popular tourist attraction due to its unique landscape and the legends associated with it. There are hiking trails and viewpoints, especially at Klucze, where large sandy plains are still visible.
