This bronze bust is located in the well-kept gardens within the Valença do Minho fortress and next to a beautiful chapel.
He was born in Lamego (Portugal) in the 19th century. In 1911 he entered the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon, where he completed his studies brilliantly in 1917. In 1920 he completed his doctorate in medicine, but his lack of interest worsened when he spent time in civilian and military hospitals during the influenza epidemic of 1918.
In the scientific field he produced several articles on dermatology, syphilis and other subjects,
In the elections of 28 May 1911 he was elected deputy to the National Constituent Assembly created by the new regime to draw up a republican constitution for Portugal.
His intensive scientific work in the field of oceanography, especially in the field of marine biology, is a reason to pay tribute to this very learned man, until he died of a heart attack in his home in Lisbon in 1959.
