The Monument to the Lacemaker of Vila do Conde is a tribute to the women of Vila do Conde who have continued the art of lace-making for centuries.
The monument was designed by Ilídio Fontes and Cláudio Ricca and was inaugurated on November 7, 1993.
The lacemaker weaves fine lace by hand. Bobbin lace has become very popular in Portugal , especially in the coastal areas, starting in the northern area of Caminha and ending in the sunny city of Olhão. However, nowhere has it become as popular as in the municipalities of Vila do Conde and Peniche.
The city also has a museum that houses the largest lacework in the world .
