Largo dos Artistas, located in the heart of the city, owes its current name to the craftsmen who used to gather there to attract new workers. In the Middle Ages and modern times, carpenters, breezers, tailors and others would gather here. These gatherings continued until the mid-20th century, when Largo do Senhor da Cruz became home to skilled workers in the construction industry.
This monument, inaugurated on May 1, 2002 , is dedicated to the Vilacondense workers who contributed to the expansion of the city. The three figures, built on a human scale and designed by sculptor Manuel Sousa Pereira , represent a carpenter, a laborer and a mason .
