Construction began in 1559 after a decision by the brotherhood's assembly to build the church.
The clock and the bell tower had to be built like those of the Misericórdia do Porto and the pulpit like that of the church of Santo Eloy in the same city. The façade is simple and sober, which is typical of the Philippine Renaissance . The emphasis is on the portal, where four columns support a straight pediment topped by images of Our Lady of the Conception and the Visitation.
The interior is characterized by tiled walls, altarpieces and ceilings covered with wooden coffers.
The cross in front of the church was built in 1713 by master Domingos Moreira, from Moreira da Maia. This delicate stonework , with rich decorations on each of the elements that make up the cross, has Baroque features.
