Lamego has an impressive view with its more than 600 steps leading to the sanctuary. But the rest of the city is also worth a day trip . This city guide is a good guide to make sure you don't miss anything.
Start from the tourist office car park where the bus station is also located.
We immediately arrive at the Lamego Museum , which was previously the Episcopal Palace . A little further on is the Cathedral.
We make a detour to the church of Santa Cruz, one of the largest churches in Lamego which belonged to the monastery of the same name .
After the cemetery, we arrive at the spectacular stairs that lead to the Santuário da Nossa Senhora dos Remédios , about 600 steps higher. It is definitely worth the walk up (you can also go by car: there is a car park) because the azulejos , the Sereia fountain and the Courtyard of the Kings with the Fountain of the Giants are well worth it. A word of advice: take the time to look around you!
The shrine on top of the hill is definitely worth a visit.
You can return by the stairs, or by the forest path which offers more shade during the hottest hours of the day.
Below we follow Avenida Visconde Guedes Teixeira all the way to the end. Don't forget to look back!
At the Ribeiro Conceição Theatre, we turn left in front of the San Franciscan Church and the Episcopal Palace. A little further on is the Igreja das Chagas , one of the most beautiful jewels of the architectural heritage of the Douro region.
Finally, we visit the Castelo where you have a beautiful view of the city and its surroundings from the keep.
Make sure to check out the local tourist information . This gives you an explanation of what you are seeing.
This tour/city walk is part of a series of city walks and tours starting from Resende and Arcos near Ponte de Lima and described in "Day trips Douro and northern Portugal".
