The mapmaker Charles Joseph Minard created a marvelous map of Napoleon´s March to Moscow. It shows that Napoleon started with more than 400,000 men. He reached Moscow with only 100,000. But the worst had still to come. He got back with only 10,000. Mapmaker Charles Joseph Minard included six seperate variables in his map. It includes the size of the army, the path, placenames, the dates and the temperature. It is one of the first examples of a flow map. Minard was a pioneer of the use of graphics in engineering and statistics.
