Singapore is sometimes referred to as a city in a park. The Botanic Gardens are less known to tourists, but they should not be missed. The botanical garden was established in the mid-19th century and is a precious paradise for plant lovers. If you don’t believe us: the park has been awarded numerous international prizes and is even on the World Heritage List.
The domain consists of various gardens, among which the National Orchid Garden, the Ginger Garden, the Rainforest Garden, and the Ethnobotany Garden are the most well-known. In these gardens, you can find numerous restaurants and bars along cozy squares. There is even a proper food court, with stalls where you can taste various dishes. Access to the botanical garden is free; a small entrance fee is only requested for the orchid garden. Unfortunately, we arrive too late to visit the orchids.
We are, however, very impressed by the lush Foliage Garden, the impressive Rainforest Garden, and the small mysterious Ginger Garden. In the Ethnobotany Garden, a stage is set up where the A Capella festival is taking place during our visit. As we wander through the garden, we enjoy the largely harmonious blending of voices, while occasionally having to tolerate a moment of total cat screeching.
We stay in the botanical garden until it is dark. Where you would usually avoid parks elsewhere in the world after sunset, this is not a problem in Singapore. The lights come on, the restaurants and bars are in full swing, and the A Capella groups only get better in quality.
