Wat Chai Sri Phum was built in 1519 in the reign of King Phra Mueang Kaeo (reign 1495-1525). The monastery was established on an auspicious site where a fig tree was standing considered as a conveyor of good fortune for the city. The monastery was renovated in 1837 in the reign of Prince Phuthawong (Prince Phutthawong or Buddhavansa, reign 1826-1846) and is now locally known as Wat Phan Ta Kun.
