Barafu Hut is the last campsite before the summit on these routes. It is at an altitude of 4646 m. There is a beautiful view of the peak, which now seems very close.
There are no facilities other than a ranger's hut and pit toilets . Barafu means 'ice' in Swahili and it's cold here too because of the wind. There is little or no water here. The only water available is used for cooking or drinking and is carried by porters.
The campsite is very rocky and has a steep slope. He climbs between the tents.
From Barafu Hut, most summit climbs start around midnight to be at the summit by sunrise as the trek takes between 6 and 7 hours .
