Fort Mackinac is a well-known place in the history of medical research. Here, in 1822, soldier Alexis St. Martin was wounded with a bullet in the stomach. Doctor William Beaumont was able to patch him up, but the hole in his abdominal wall remained. The doctor found it "a wonderful opportunity" to conduct experiments with gastric juices. He even made a contract with his patient so that he could continue to conduct scientific research through the hole in his stomach.
