El Hinterautal es un valle que atraviesa el Karwendel de oeste a este, por el que fluye el Isar y en el que se encuentran los manantiales del Isar.
El Hinterautal se extiende desde Scharnitz hasta el cierre del valle oriental, conocido como Rossloch, a lo largo de aproximadamente 14 km. Partiendo de Scharnitz, el valle está limitado al norte inicialmente por unos pocos kilómetros por la cadena de montañas del Karwendel del Norte, después interrumpido por el valle de Karwendel con el arroyo Karwendel que desemboca en el Isar, así como más al este por la cadena Hinterautal-Vomper. La limitación sur la forma la cadena Gleirsch-Halltal.
