Het Hinterautal is een vallei die het Karwendel van west naar oost doorkruist, die door de Isar wordt doordrongen en waar de Isarbronnen zich bevinden.
Het Hinterautal strekt zich uit van Scharnitz tot aan de oostelijke vallei-afsluiting, die Rossloch wordt genoemd, over een lengte van ongeveer 14 km. Vanaf Scharnitz wordt de vallei in het noorden aanvankelijk over een paar kilometer begrensd door de Noordelijke Karwendelkette, waarna het onderbroken wordt door het Karwendeltal met de naar de Isar stromende Karwendelbach, en verder oostelijk door de Hinterautal-Vomper-kette. De zuidelijke begrenzing wordt gevormd door de Gleirsch-Halltal-kette.
