La Hinterautal è una valle che attraversa il Karwendel da ovest a est, attraversata dall'Isar e in cui si trovano le sorgenti dell'Isar.
La Hinterautal si estende da Scharnitz fino alla chiusura orientale della valle, chiamata Rossloch, per una lunghezza di circa 14 km. A partire da Scharnitz, la valle è inizialmente delimitata a nord da pochi chilometri dalla catena montuosa del Karwendel settentrionale, successivamente interrotta dalla valle del Karwendel con il torrente Karwendel che si immette nell'Isar e, più a est, dalla catena Hinterautal-Vomper. Il confine meridionale è costituito dalla catena Gleirsch-Halltal.
