La notable torre de agua en forma de globo de Bierbeek, también conocida como la torre de agua en Bovenheide, apareció en las noticias en julio de 2011 cuando una paloma muerta cayó en el agua. El resultado fue que el agua potable no era apta para el consumo en numerosos municipios que reciben agua de esta torre de agua. La torre de agua en forma de globo tiene una capacidad de 500 m³ y mide 29 metros de altura, sin contar las numerosas antenas en la cúpula... Además de Bierbeek, también abastece a la clínica Pellenberg, una parte de Kessel-Lo (Trolieberg), Lubbeek (red alta), Blanden, Haasrode y Lovenjoel.
