La Reserva Natural Flamenca 'De Zwinduinen en -polders' cuenta con una variedad de biotopos costeros. A lo largo del lado del mar se encuentran dunas costeras, más tierra adentro las dunas se transforman en matorrales y prados de duna, y se encuentra un bosque plantado con árboles de hoja caduca y de coníferas. La parte sur de la reserva es una antigua llanura de playa que ahora consiste en prados. Desde aquí se puede disfrutar de vistas de estos diferentes biotopos costeros.
Debido a las transiciones en, entre otros, el suelo (de arena a arcilla) y el agua subterránea (de salada a dulce), esta área natural alberga una flora y fauna extremadamente raras, ¡y es por ello única en Flandes!
