La Riserva Naturale Fiamminga "Le Dune e le Paludi di Zwinduinen" ospita una vasta gamma di biotopi costieri. Lungo il lato del mare si trovano dune di spiaggia, più all'interno si trasformano in arbusti e praterie di dune e si incontra una foresta piantata con legno deciduo e conifere. La parte meridionale della riserva è una ex pianura costiera che ora consiste in prati. Da qui si ha una vista su tutti questi diversi biotopi costieri.
Grazie ai cambiamenti nel terreno (da sabbia a argilla) e nelle acque sotterranee (da salate a dolci), quest'area naturale presenta una flora e una fauna estremamente rare ed è quindi unica nelle Fiandre!
