El sitio de la actual torre del campanario estaba anteriormente ocupado por una iglesia que fue demolida en 1878. En 1932 se llevó a cabo una ampliación del ayuntamiento, en parte en memoria de las víctimas de la Primera Guerra Mundial. Este nuevo ala incluía un campanario de 35 metros de altura y fue construido con ladrillo rojo y piedra caliza. La entrada está decorada con bellotas, el símbolo de la ciudad de Eeklo. El arquitecto de esta nueva ala fue Amand Janssens. El propio Ayuntamiento, en estilo renacentista flamenco, data del siglo XVII.
