El 17 de diciembre de 1944 tuvo lugar en la intersección de Baugnez la 'Masacre de Malmedy', un verdadero crimen de guerra. La unidad de combate alemana Kampftruppe Peiper ejecutó a 82 prisioneros de guerra estadounidenses. En cada piedra negra y rectangular del muro conmemorativo está grabado el nombre de una de las víctimas.
La misma unidad de las SS cometió esa misma día y en los días siguientes más masacres, entre ellas en Honsfeld y Büllingen. En 1946, los SS fueron juzgados en Dachau por el consejo de guerra.
