En el granero de Molensteen está el año 1857. Es en ese año que en Gante se funda el primer sindicato en Bélgica, la Sociedad Fraternal de Tejedores. Y también es el año en que el francés Jean-François Millet creó sus famosas Recolectoras (Des glaneuses) y el Algelus. Podría haber sido una imagen del entorno de ese granero en ese momento. En la primera exposición, esta representación realista de tres pobres campesinas recibió muchas críticas y se consideró demasiado revolucionaria y una glorificación del socialismo.
