Aunque Aywaille no es grande, hay más de ocho mil habitantes, y por eso cumple una función de centro para la región. También es un importante nudo de carreteras: a Aywaille a veces se le llama la puerta de las Ardenas de Lieja. Cerca de allí, austriacos y franceses libraron una de sus batallas en 1794 en la meseta Sur La Reid o Heid des Gattes, que ahora es una reserva natural.
