Al is Aywaille niet groot, er wonen wel meer dan achtduizend mensen, en het vervult daardoor een centrumfunctie voor de streek. Het is ook een belangrijk wegenknooppunt: Aywaille wordt wel eens de poort van de Luikse Ardennen genoemd. Vlakbij vochten Oostenrijkers en Fransen in 1794 een van hun veldslagen uit op de hoogte Sur La Reid of Heid des Gattes, dat nu een natuurreservaat is.
