Bien qu'Aywaille ne soit pas grande, plus de huit mille personnes y résident, et elle remplit donc une fonction centrale pour la région. C'est aussi un important carrefour routier : Aywaille est parfois appelée la porte des Ardennes liégeoises. Non loin de là, des Autrichiens et des Français ont mené une de leurs batailles en 1794 sur le plateau de Sur La Reid ou Heid des Gattes, qui est maintenant une réserve naturelle.
