Después de que los franceses demolieron las murallas de la ciudad en 1675, esta pudo reconstruirlas después de la Paz de Nimega, pero ya no se sentía segura.
Los canónigos de la iglesia del capítulo de San Martín y San Hadulino hicieron una peregrinación a Roma y también visitaron la Basílica de Loreto. Querían poner Wezet bajo la protección de la Virgen de Loreto y, para ello, erigir una copia de la Santa Casa de María, como la que se encontraba en Loreto, en una colina sobre la ciudad.
