After the French demolished the city walls in 1675, the city could indeed rebuild them after the Treaty of Nijmegen, but people no longer felt safe.
Canons of the Chapter Church of St. Martin and St. Hadelinus had made a pilgrimage to Rome and also visited the Basilica of Loreto. They wanted to place Wezet under the protection of the Virgin of Loreto and to that end, on a height above the city, erect a copy of the Holy House of Mary, as it existed in Loreto.
