Dopo che i francesi demolirono le mura della città nel 1675, la città poté ricostruirle, dopo la Pace di Nijmegen, ma non si sentiva più al sicuro.
I canonici della Chiesa Cattedrale di San Martino e San Adelino avevano intrapreso un pellegrinaggio a Roma e avevano anche visitato la Basilica di Loreto. Volevano porre Wezet sotto la protezione della Vergine di Loreto e a tal fine, su un colle sopra la città, erigere una copia della Santa Casa di Maria, così come si trovava a Loreto.
