San Roque de Montpellier fue a Roma lo antes posible. A su lado , cuidó a los enfermos, preferentemente a los que padecían la peste , y pronto se hizo un nombre curando a algunos con la señal de la cruz . A su regreso, él mismo contrajo la plaga .
En iconografía, por lo tanto, a menudo se le representa con la pierna abierta . Se retiró a un bosque y allí fue sanado por un ángel.
