El CSEM es un centro de investigación y desarrollo especializado en microtecnologías, nanotecnologías, microelectrónica, ingeniería de sistemas, fotovoltaica y tecnologías de la información y la comunicación. La sede de la organización se encuentra en Neuchâtel, Suiza.
La historia del CSEM comienza a principios de los años 1980, cuando el Consejo Federal se preocupa por el retroceso de la industria suiza frente a los países vecinos en el campo de las nuevas tecnologías. Para invertir la tendencia, decide lanzar la creación de un centro privado de investigación y desarrollo. Neuchâtel parece ser el lugar adecuado para establecer este nuevo centro.
