Het CSEM is een onderzoeks- en ontwikkelingscentrum, gespecialiseerd in microtechnologie, nanotechnologie, micro-elektronica, systeemengineering, fotovoltaïsche technologieën en informatie- en communicatietechnologie. Het hoofdkantoor van de organisatie is gevestigd in Neuchâtel, Zwitserland.
De geschiedenis van het CSEM begint begin jaren tachtig, toen de Federale Raad zich zorgen maakte over de achteruitgang van de Zwitserse industrie ten opzichte van de buurlanden op het gebied van nieuwe technologieën. Om de trend om te keren, besloot hij de oprichting van een particulier onderzoeks- en ontwikkelingscentrum te lanceren. Neuchâtel leek toen de geschikte plek te zijn om dit nieuwe centrum te vestigen.
