El castillo de Hardenstein es una ruina situada en la media Ruhr, entre el distrito de Herbede y el núcleo urbano de Witten, en el actual distrito de Ennepe-Ruhr en Renania del Norte-Westfalia, Alemania. Está rodeado por el área natural protegida del mismo nombre, Hardenstein, y se encuentra cerca del Muttental. Hasta la finalización del ferrocarril del valle del Ruhr en el siglo XIX, el castillo estaba directamente junto al río. Tipológicamente, la estructura, conocida como castillo desde hace tiempo, es una "casa fuerte", es decir, una mansión. Sirvió principalmente como residencia de sus propietarios aristocráticos y, por lo tanto, solo era defensiva en medida limitada.
