El ayuntamiento gótico de Aquisgrán es, junto con la catedral, el edificio más característico del núcleo histórico de Aquisgrán.
En la primera mitad del siglo XIV, los ciudadanos de Aquisgrán, bajo la dirección de su alcalde en funciones Gerhard Chorus, construyeron un nuevo ayuntamiento como símbolo de su libertad cívica. Hasta entonces, el Grashaus, edificado a mediados del siglo XIII, había servido como ayuntamiento. Como concesión a los reyes romano-germanos, sin embargo, los ciudadanos tuvieron que comprometerse a establecer una sala para el festín de coronación en el nuevo ayuntamiento. La construcción comenzó en 1330, levantándose el edificio sobre los cimientos de un palacio en ruinas de la época carolingia, la Aula regia del palacio imperial.
