La designación del lago se deriva del cercano lugar Hohenweiden en el actual distrito de Saalekreis. En la inmediata vecindad se encuentra el lago Rattmannsdorfer. Juntos, ambos lagos también se conocen como los estanques de Rattmannsdorf.
La cantera de grava de Hohenweiden se construyó en las décadas de 1960 y 1970 para la obtención del material de construcción grava para la construcción de las cercanas fábricas de Buna. La extracción duró hasta aproximadamente mediados de la década de 1970. Tiene una profundidad de 3–4,5 m y posee una superficie de agua de aproximadamente 21 ha.
