Il nome del lago deriva dal vicino paese di Hohenweiden, nell'attuale distretto di Saalekreis. Nella immediata vicinanza si trova il lago di Rattmannsdorf. Insieme, entrambi i laghi sono anche chiamati stagni di Rattmannsdorf.
La cava di ghiaia di Hohenweiden è stata realizzata negli anni '60 e '70 per l'estrazione del materiale da costruzione ghiaia per la costruzione delle vicine opere Buna. L'estrazione è continuata fino a circa metà degli anni '70. Ha una profondità di 3–4,5 m e possiede una superficie d'acqua di circa 21 ha.
