The name of the lake is derived from the nearby town of Hohenweiden in today's district of Saalekreis. In the immediate vicinity is the Rattmannsdorfer See. Together, both lakes are also referred to as Rattmannsdorfer Teiche.
The Hohenweidener gravel pit was established in the 1960s and 1970s for the extraction of gravel for the construction of the nearby Buna plants. The mining lasted until around the middle of the 1970s. It is 3–4.5 m deep and has a water surface area of approximately 21 ha.
