De naam van het meer is afgeleid van de nabijgelegen plaats Hohenweiden in de huidige Landkreis Saalekreis. In de directe omgeving bevindt zich de Rattmannsdorfer See. Samen worden beide meren ook wel de Rattmannsdorfer Teiche genoemd.
De Hohenweidener grindgroeve werd in de jaren '60 en '70 aangelegd voor de winning van grind als bouwmateriaal voor de bouw van de nabijgelegen Buna-fabrieken. De winning duurde tot ongeveer halverwege de jaren '70. Het meer is 3–4,5 m diep en heeft een wateroppervlak van ongeveer 21 ha.
