La désignation du lac dérive de l'endroit voisin de Hohenweiden, dans l'actuel district de Saalekreis. Dans le voisinage immédiat se trouve le lac de Rattmannsdorf. Ensemble, les deux lacs sont également appelés les étangs de Rattmannsdorf.
La carrière de gravier de Hohenweiden a été créée dans les années 1960 et 1970 pour l'extraction du matériau de construction gravier pour la construction des usines de Buna à proximité. L'extraction a duré jusqu'à environ le milieu des années 1970. Il a une profondeur de 3 à 4,5 m et une surface d'eau d'environ 21 hectares.
