El Museo de Navegación Antigua en Maguncia se inauguró en 1994 en el antiguo mercado mayorista de la estación sur como una sucursal del Museo Central Romano-Germánico, después de que en 1981/82 se encontraran durante trabajos de construcción cerca del Rin los bien conservados restos de varios barcos de la época romana tardía, los llamados barcos romanos de Maguncia. Se trataba de dos tipos diferentes de barcos de guerra de la flota del Rin de la Roma tardía, así como de otras clases de barcos.
