Het Museum voor Antieke Scheepvaart in Mainz werd in 1994 geopend in de voormalige groothallen bij het Zuidstation als een nevenvestiging van het Romeins-Germanisch Centraal Museum, nadat in 1981/82 tijdens bouwwerkzaamheden nabij de Rijn de goed bewaarde restanten van verschillende schepen uit de late Romeinse tijd, de zogenaamde Mainzer Romeinse schepen, werden gevonden. Het ging om twee verschillende typen oorlogsschepen van de late Romeinse Rijnvloot, evenals om andere types schepen.
