Il Museo della navigazione antica a Magonza è stato inaugurato nel 1994 nell'ex mercato all'ingrosso presso la stazione ferroviaria meridionale come sede distaccata del Museo centrale romano-germanico, dopo che nel 1981/82, durante dei lavori di costruzione vicino al Reno, furono trovati i ben conservati resti di diverse navi dell'epoca romana tarda, le cosiddette navi romane di Magonza. Si trattava di due diversi tipi di navi da guerra della flotta renana dell'epoca romana tarda, oltre ad altre tipologie di navi.
