En la instalación, que es relativamente pequeña en comparación con otros zoológicos, se mantienen aproximadamente 300 animales de 50 especies en recintos naturales. El parque es de propiedad familiar y tiene un zoológico hermano a solo 15 km de distancia, el zoológico Essehof en Lehre.
La apertura de la instalación tuvo lugar en 1964. En 1995 se amplió el zoológico. En el año 2001 se inauguró un nuevo edificio de entrada. Aquí también hay una instalación gastronómica. Además, se creó un nuevo parque infantil y un aparcamiento.
