Dans ce parc, qui est relativement petit comparé à d'autres zoos, environ 300 animaux de 50 espèces sont gardés dans des enclos proches de leur habitat naturel. Le parc est détenu par une famille et a un zoo frère situé à environ 15 km, le Tierpark Essehof à Lehre.
Le parc a ouvert ses portes en 1964. Il a été agrandi en 1995. En 2001, un nouveau bâtiment d'entrée a été inauguré. Il abrite également un établissement de restauration. De plus, un nouvel aire de jeux pour enfants et un parking ont été créés.
