El Sauer es un afluente de unos 30 km de longitud, que fluye hacia el noreste y que desemboca por la derecha en el Altenau en el distrito de Paderborn, en Renania del Norte-Westfalia.
El Sauer nace en la parte sur de la sierra de Egge y en el parque natural de Teutoburgo / Egge en la zona urbana de Lichtenau. Su fuente se encuentra al noreste del barrio de Kleinenberg, un poco por encima de la carretera nacional 763.
