La Sauer est un affluent d'environ 30 km de long, situé au nord-est et sur la rive orographique droite de l'Altenau dans le district de Paderborn en Rhénanie-du-Nord-Westphalie.
La Sauer prend sa source dans la partie sud de l'Eggegebirge et du parc naturel de la forêt de Teutoburg / Eggegebirge dans la zone urbaine de Lichtenau. Sa source se trouve au nord-est du quartier de Kleinenberg, légèrement au-dessus de la route nationale 763.
