De Sauer is een ongeveer 30 km lange, noordoostelijke en orografisch rechtse zijrivier van de Altenau in de Noordrijn-Westfalense Kreis Paderborn.
De Sauer ontspringt in het zuidelijke deel van het Eggegebergte en het Natuurpark Teutoburger Wald / Eggegebirge in het stadsgebied van Lichtenau. Haar bron ligt noordoostelijk van de stadsdeel Kleinenberg, iets boven de provinciale weg 763.
