El Gymnasium Oedeme lleva su nombre del distrito en el suroeste de la ciudad hanseática de Lüneburg, donde se encuentra la escuela. Es una escuela de tiempo completo desde 2006; alrededor de 1500 estudiantes son enseñados por aproximadamente 125 docentes. Aproximadamente el 60 por ciento de los estudiantes provienen del distrito, cerca del 40 por ciento de la ciudad de Lüneburg.
Cuando se fundó el Gymnasium en 1971, la comunidad de Oedeme aún era independiente y pertenecía al distrito de Lüneburg, que también era y sigue siendo el responsable del Gymnasium Oedeme.
