Het Gymnasium Oedeme is vernoemd naar de wijk in het zuidwesten van de Hanzestad Lüneburg, waar de school gevestigd is. Het is sinds 2006 een open school voor de hele dag; ongeveer 1500 leerlingen worden door ongeveer 125 docenten onderwezen. Ongeveer 60 procent van de leerlingen komt uit de gemeente, ca. 40 procent uit de stad Lüneburg.
Toen het Gymnasium in 1971 werd opgericht, was de gemeente Oedeme nog zelfstandig en maakte het deel uit van de gemeente Lüneburg, die ook de beheerder van het Gymnasium Oedeme was en is. Met de samenvoeging in 1974 werd Oedeme een wijk van Lüneburg; aldus ligt het gymnasium van de gemeente tegenwoordig op het grondgebied van de Hanzestad Lüneburg.
